Use Canteens not Plastic Bottles

By

Plastic bottles are easy to use and buy, but they are not as good as they seem, and it is simply better to use the safer alternative of a stainless steel canteen. There are a number of reasons for using the canteen instead of a plastic bottle. The canteen is healthier for people and the environment, saves people money, and reduces plastic waste in landfills.

The first reason to use a canteen instead of a plastic bottle is because it people from dangerous toxins and is plainly healthier. Water bottles contain many toxic chemicals that are quite harmful. When the water bottle label says that it is made with fewer chemicals, so what? Remember, plastic itself is made by combining chemicals and organic material to get the finished product. So when it gets dumped into a landfill, all those chemicals will make the soil toxic and poison many plants and animals. To prevent this, use a canteen, it contains no poisonous chemicals and is safer for people and for the environment. Many plastic bottles are made with oil, BPA and other chemicals, so when the plastic gets warm (example: in hot and sunny weather) some of the chemicals seep into the water. Yuck!Canteens are also healthier to use because you can consume more water and refill it over and over again. Some people say that it is healthier to drink from bottled water because it is cleaner than tap water. That may be true in areas with rusty and contaminated pipes, but all that needs to be done to keep tap water safe to drink is to filter it, or to, boil it(Or a combination of both). Many people seem to think that drinking from water bottles is much safer, you are wrong because many companies use tap water and some don’t even filter it. By using the canteen and deciding where the water poured comes from, this makes using canteens the healthier choice.

The third reason to use a canteen is that it saves people money. Canteens save money because people don’t have to keep buying new bottles every time they run out. Imagine all the money spent every year just buying water bottles. Now think about how much money is saved by using a canteen and simply refilling it at home or at the water fountain. Ninety percent of the cost of the water bottle pays for the making, transporting, and marketing of the bottle. The other ten percent is the actual cost of the water. (Forty four percent of that water is municipal water that you could have gotten from the tap.) Most canteens don’t cost much either. One canteen may only cost as much as a case of water bottles. So, for people who are living on a budget or are tight on money, this will be a major money saver. All this makes a canteen an economically smarter choice.

The last reason to use a canteen is that it reduces plastic in landfills. Not only is plastic toxic to the environment, it takes at least seventy years to fully decompose. By using steel canteen people won’t need to worry about it harming the environment because it is a metal that was originally found in the earth. Remember before how the plastic will make the soil toxic? Many landfills use liners that keep the chemicals from seeping into the surrounding land and ground water. Even new, these liners let many chemicals pass, and more chemicals will pass through the older the liner becomes. Well, imagine that two hundred years from now a farmer decides to build a farm on the soil some distance from where the landfill was. Then the products the farm will produce will contain the chemicals from the plastic because the plants will use the nutrients and chemicals that soil, and the leftover toxic materials. Who knows, maybe the fad of using metal canteens will catch on and then the next generation of people won’t be eating contaminated carrots. Remember, using a metal canteen is a great way to help the environment from becoming over polluted with plastic and its deadly chemicals.

Break the habit of using plastic bottles and hurting the earth. Use the friendlier choice of a stainless steel or metal canteen. Using a canteen will help people and their families stay healthier, will save them a ton of money and will also reduce plastic waste in landfills keeping our mother earth a safer place to live on.
